Benjamin Jeanjean | True Stories

Since his acclaimed "True Stories" (2016) showcase at Adhocpad Gallery in Vienna, Austria, artist Benjamin Jeanjean "True Stories" exhibition has now become a long-term project for the ANP Artist and a new philanthropic focus for RVCA. Inspired by True Stories, RVCA created a clothing collection to celebrate Jeanjean's art, his book and the catalyst it's become in raising awareness for refugees. The True Stories collection has become a vehicle that is now supporting non-profits helping refugees from war-torn countries. Proceeds from this collection will be donated to a non-profit organization that is working tirelessly in aiding refugees around the globe.

True Stories:

A struggle for life, freedom and humanity

As told by refugees and illustrated by ANP Artist, Benjamin Jeanjean

"This is about a project that started with a feeling. The feeling that we are all Humans. No matter if we are black or white, good or bad, no matter where you came from. I want to step out of my imaginary sanctuary and bring reality to life. To illustrate their stories. TRUE STORIES. Let yourself get dragged into their struggle. it is also our struggle for life." - Benjamin Jeanjean

ANP artist Benjamin Jeanjean spent a month living and diving into the life stories of Ali, Firas and other war refugees coming from Middle-East to capture and witness their true stories…

With his signature drawings and illustrations, Jeanjean committed to bringing to life those words and moments as told by those who have gone through such unforgettable life-changing experiences.

More on Jeanjean and his art:

Based in Southwest France, Benjamin JeanJean’s art stands for a neo-symbolism based on contemporary aesthetics. As an artist he is normally looking for inspiration in the unknown, a surreal world that lives from people’s dreams, thoughts and fears. But after having met Ali and other refugees during an art project in Vienna in 2016, he wanted to step out of this imaginary sanctuary. To bring reality to life. To illustrate the reality of refugees. To tell their stories. True stories.

"The essence of my art didn’t change though. I want people to look closer. This is when their imagination kicks in and the unconscious takes over. Skulls, for example, are only skulls at first glance. But in fact, they represent any human: blacks, whites, Syrians, Austrians, Americans, good people, bad people, workers, doctors, politicians, you, me. We all have a skull, we all are human beings. There is a story behind each human, and each story is worth being told." -- Benjamin JeanJean.

FAHRENHEIT INN | ERWIN BLISS | RVCA EUROPE SURF

Fahrenheit Inn

Last winter in France was a bit of a blur.

A rather wet blur in fact, resulting in a never-ending surge of rain that kept everybody at home, twiddling their thumbs while getting fat on cheese.

It’s in these moments that our expatriate island boys’ nerves are put to the test, and Erwin’s and I’s didn’t last long. Our eyes were glued on the maps, and soon enough we were headed towards a country far south, which we won’t reveal the name of—but that will no doubt look familiar to those who can read the signs.

Upon arrival, a piece of paper with instructions was given to us.

We were told to take the west road. The one leading to that infamous town that was once a gold mine, far behind the mountains.

« Continue straight upon crossing the 14th bridge—the blue one—and don’t stop until you spot the hill of the eternal rainbow » it read.

That was the indication that we would be near our destination: A hotel where the grass was bright green and the oceans folds were warm and hollow.

We had to show up at noon in order to meet the owner of the place. « She will be sunbathing in a pink umbrella » our guide told us.

That’s when we knew we were at the end of the road:

Fahrenheit Inn.

PORTAL | A Short Film Featuring ARI BROWNE

Portal is a collaboration of talents between Ari Browne, Joshua Keogh, and JJ Stanbrook.

Their pursuits were purely in the name of progress, not perfection. Whilst adhering to popular performance ideas, the surfboards follow a trajectory far different to other surfboard design.

The surfboards on show are a rarity in that they move away from typical design processes and start to voluntarily move towards exploring the unknown outer precipice or cusp of surfboard design.

Typically in surfboard design function outweighs form. The aim was to invert this relationship and explore the dynamics that occurs when 'Form' (the appearance of the surfboard) is placed as the priority over 'Function' (the performance of the surfboard).

Unsurprisingly the resulting surfboard identify firstly as sculptural objects and secondly as surfboards.

Surprisingly, however, no quantifiable sacrifice or detriment to performance was apparent. This is due to the clinical approach Josh took when shaping the surfboards.

Seamlessly harmonising performance and aesthetics. “The boards were well and truly operating in the performance window” testifies Ari Browne. They all worked amazingly well.

Stanbrook’s short film is a work of art in its own rights. The film also gives the trio the opportunity an to tell a story of adventure, fun, and of course, lordish behaviour.

Stanbrook’s knack for story telling and humour are at work as he depicts a washed up idiot, Ari Browne, who, plays himself a he minces around the exotic Moroccan coastline. Lastly the film showcases the exceptional performance attributes of the ten finless surfboards.

Tom Gerrard Exhibition | Through My Eyes

RVCA Special Edition Artist Tom Gerrard recently travelled to Tokyo and opened ‘Through My Eyes’ at the RVCA Upstairs Gallery Tokyo. Australian artist Tom Gerrard explores his surroundings through his daily drawings in his passport sizes sketchbooks. In his first ever Japanese exhibition he is presenting 20 works on paper that explore a diverse range of subjects and objects that he has executed in his minimal colour palette of red, black and white with the odd hint of chrome and grey.

These subjects are the commonly overlooked items in Australian life. Each piece has been approached as he would a page in his sketch books. Yet he has swapped out his pens for spray paint, ink, watercolour and acrylic paints. This is a unique exhibition for Tom as the demands of large galleries of his home town of Melbourne have seen his work grow in scale and price. With this exhibition, he has taken a step back from the large canvases and wooden panels and worked exclusively on large sheets of paper.

Thanks to Bintang for the opening night refreshments. View the catalogue of available works here.

RVCA Morocco

From Tangier to Casablanca, Morocco has long had an alluring aspect to it. Summoning writers, artists and musicians to explore it’s unique yet diverse culture. The RVCA skate team found themselves drawn there in exploration of untapped spots and rarely skated cities. Starting in Tangier and making their way down the coast to Safi, the days were spent skating, eating tagine, couscous and drinking sweet green tea with mint leaves. With camels on the beach, ancient castles and mosques and contrasting modern architecture, Morocco proved itself the perfect backdrop for an array of great skate spots, good times with friends and adventures they’ll never forget.
